Transition Town Hackney is a group of individuals concerned about the future, and particularly with how we are are going to continue to live comfortably, well within in a huge urban metropolis, as supplies of oil and coal dwindle, pushing prices of everything up.

We aim to educate ourselves as to the facts of this impending crisis, prepare, and put in place systems to insulate ourselves and our wider community from the worst effects. We do this through educational events: talks and film screenings followed by discussions, and by forming working groups who meet regularly and focus on a specific topic.

If you are interested in what we are doing, please check the calendar for the next event (not all events on our calendar are organised by TTH, but all are relevant) and better still join the one of the working groups on this page and help them in their work. A few hours a week is all it takes.

One of the main benefits to a TT group is getting to know people who live in your local area, so please also join one of the local area groups and say hello to your neighbours.

Introductory Hello

Hello everybody,

I've just joined so thought I'd leave a hello. I have a green friend who although a bit funny to look at does seem to speak a lot of sense to me and has encouraged me to find out more about transition towns and what's being done locally. I work for a fair trade charity so lots of shared interests, values I imagine here but having felt quite paralysed by huge environmental issues hope that joining a local group taking practical steps to address them may motivate me to do somethi… Continue

Email to Gillian Nicks at Hackney council planning dept re proposal to build a hotel on the site of The Foundry bar

Dear Ms Nicks –

Once again I find myself having to write to express my concern about yet another worrying development in our beleaguered borough. The Foundry Bar is a contemporary classic and a much welcome haven from the rampant commercialism of downtown Shoreditch. The values and ethics that the management of the Foundry display are those that echo the ideas and attitudes of Hackney residents past and present, the very same which have made the borough such a popular destination for the arts a… Continue

10:10 Reducing my family's C02 by 10%

I wanted to let people know what we're doing here (my little family of 5), trying to reduce our carbon footprint, having signed up to 10:10 and also becoming increasingly concerned about the sheer level of climate change being witnessed, right now, around the world, and also the frightening scientific predictions and concerns. (and that's without peak oil.....).

However, in case anyone is thinking that transition town people are all living in super-insulated homes with renewable energy forms of… Continue

Great meeting on transport last night

So last night's "meeting" - they are really talk events now - was by Carl Pittam of Sustrans. Sustrans have been going for over 30 years and do projects such as re-designing residential streets to make them more friendly to people and less car-centric, slowing down or stopping traffic and adding planters and other greenery. There are 2 pilots in Hackney of the "DIY Streets" project which gets residents to meet and talk about problems on t… Continue

Great Idea. I have just bought some window film draftproofing kit which for about £20 will temporarily secondary glaze leaky sash windows. Cant make that date but be good if someone from TTH could go and share the experience.
on Sunday
This is a great idea, as draughtproofing is the cheapest and most dramatic way to save money and energy, other measures to move towards carbon neutrality becoming increasingly expensive.
